Torbreck Vineyards share how SWAN Systems is helping improve irrigation management, vineyard consistency, and wine quality in the Barossa Valley
Wine Australia’s Reading Between the Vines video series highlights innovative agricultural technologies supporting grape and wine production. In this episode, Torbreck Vineyards and SWAN Systems share how data-driven irrigation management is delivering more consistent vine growth and supporting premium wine quality.
Variability across the vineyard was a key challenge. Shallow soils in parts of the Descendant Vineyard caused some vines to defoliate early, making irrigation timing critical.
By integrating irrigation controllers, soil moisture probes, weather stations, and satellite imagery into a single platform, SWAN Systems enabled Torbreck to make clearer, more confident irrigation decisions.
“SWAN brings together all of our data – weather, soil moisture, irrigation, and imagery – into one system where we can forecast, set budgets, and make accurate irrigation decisions.”
With SWAN Systems in place, Torbreck can now:
-
Improve uniformity across the vineyard
-
Adjust irrigation to suit variable soils and climate conditions
-
Enhance grape consistency in support of premium wine quality
The collaboration highlights how viticulture in the Barossa is embracing digital tools to manage water more efficiently and produce consistently high-quality fruit.
“It’s given us a lot more confidence in what’s actually going on in the vineyard as a whole. It’s an extremely powerful system.”
