Human effort is part of the system

Irrigation management relies on people.

Plans don’t exist on their own. Someone has to set them up, keep an eye on them, and step in when things change. That might be a small adjustment, or it might mean stopping irrigation altogether for a period of time.

A weather system moves through. A harvest gets brought forward. A spray is booked in. A pump is down for maintenance. Sometimes the reason is obvious, sometimes it isn’t. In those moments, following the schedule isn’t always the right call.

This is where experience and judgement come into play. Knowing when to hold back, when to push on, and when to revisit the plan later is part of day-to-day irrigation management.

As operations get bigger, keeping track of all this in your head gets harder. Relying on memory or informal checks only works up to a point. Clear records help people stay aligned, understand why decisions were made, and pick things up again with confidence.
